WATCH-OVER - Vehicle-to-vulnerable road user cooperative communication and sensing technologies to improve transport safety

Objectives

WATCH-OVER goal is the design and development of an integrated cooperative system for the prevention of accidents involving vulnerable road users (VRU) in urban and extra-urban areas.

The innovation of WATCH-OVER is the interaction between an on-board module and a user module, which exploits wireless short range communication technologies as an extension to vehicle autonomous systems. The added value of an architecture that involves all road users is the step beyond the limit of stand-alone systems in vulnerable users detection. The cooperative approach will extend the actual coverage of the state of the art technologies and will be open to integrate localisation technologies.

The WATCH-OVER cooperative system approach shall guarantee:

• a wider scenario coverage including blind spots,
• simple and low cost components, both on-board and in the VRU module,
• a flexible and open architecture.

The main functionalities which will be supplied by the WATCH-OVER on-board platform are:

• real time detection of pedestrians and vulnerable road users equipped with the WATCH-OVER module,
• relative positioning calculation,
• detection of dangerous situations,
• warning to the driver.
