Czech Republic has a national road safety strategy, of which the main focus is consistent with EC’s main goal of reducing the number of fatalities on road with 50% by 2010. The Czech strategy runs from 2004 until 2010 and is concerned with tackling several problem areas, such as:
• Reduce the number of accidents resulted from speeding and their consequences • Reduce the number of accidents resulted from not giving way • Reduce the number of alcohol and drug related accidents and their consequences • Reduce the number of severe injuries by increasing the wearing rate of restrain devices • Increase the protection of vulnerable road users • Provide a safe road environment • Improve of measures immediately after an accident • Increase of a respect of all road users to observe the legislation • Organise coordination of all activities
The Transport Research Centre (CDV) acts as a research institute on transport issues, and the organisation operates under the responsibility of Ministry of Transport of Czech Republic.
According to the Transport Research Centre there have been several projects regarding road safety and the improvement of traffic conditions. One of their current projects “ITS in the transport and communication environment of the Czech Republic” is concerned with analysing the conditions for building ITS in present transport and communication environment and proposals for its deployment. The aim of such project is to enhance motorist’s comfort by introducing on-line traffic information and search for optimal connections etc., increase the capacity of the network, and increase transport safety.
There have also been some supporting events concerning road safety, the latest of which being the Transport & eSafety conference held in Brno on June 6-7 2005. The aim of the conference was to spread latest information about the possibilities to increase safety on roads, as well as report about the results of some on road safety projects in EU countries. The improvements in infrastructure have helped to improve the road safety in Slovenia during the last decade. Currently, the main causes of death in Slovenia are related to alcohol or speeding.

Slovene Road Safety Council has been actively involved in developing and is currently occupied with coordinating the implementation of the National Road Safety Programme. The aim of the programme is to make the Slovenian road safety meet the situation in Europe as soon as possible. The Council pursues for Vision 0, demanding 0 fatal casualties or severe injuries on roads and is determined that the society should be capable of forming traffic systems without fatal accidents. With this target in mind, the Council is involved with prevention, educational activities, analytic-research, and other related activities for improving road safety.
