Heavy Duty Vehicles

The Heavy Duty Vehicle Workgroup reviewed former eSafety results and has concretised them regarding the special needs of Heavy Duty Vehicles, including proposed safety approaches, the development of special proposals for Heavy Vehicles as well as non-electronic approaches.

The Heavy Duty Vehicle Workgroup has been using a holistic approach to road safety including infrastructure, driver education and other sources. The Group analysed about 50 eSafety systems suitable for heavy-duty vehicles, and highlighted the most significant ones in its final report.

The main obstacles blocking further progress in this area were the lack of a positive business case and an accommodating legislative framework. The Group’s recommendations on incentives for safety systems and clarification of the EC strategy for future legislation were handed over to the European Commission.
