German Presidency eSafety Conference, 5 June 2007

In the context of the German Presidency of the EU Council, the German Federal Ministry for Transport, Building and Urban Affairs presented the eSafety conference "Possibilities of Using Electronic Systems to improve Road Safety" on 5 and 6 June 2007.

Based on the findings of workgroups on the European level, the following key issues discussed were Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI) / Communications - Enhancing Traffic Information; Human-Machine Interaction (HMI), including eSecurity - the human-machine interface to car multimedia systems, tamperproof technologies and Driver Assistance Systems (DAS) - legal situation and assessment, including the new role of motorists in partially automated in-car processes, plus EuroNCAP testing procedures for DAS.

The discussion focused on the development perspectives of an essential area of "intelligent mobility" over the next 15 years in the context of the white paper on traffic, along with conclusions for the further development of certain key issues.

The Federal Minister of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs, Wolfgang Tiefensee
The Federal Minister of Transport in his welcome address: "Traffic will increase significantly in the years to come. We must adapt to this situation now. Safety on Europe's roads is a major concern of the European Union. I support the objective of halving the number of road fatalities by 2010 with the help of the eSafety initiative. In order to achieve this objective we must deploy the accomplishments of modern technology for road safety and traffic management."

eCall demonstration
The Federal Minister of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs, Wolfgang Tiefensee: "In Germany we already have an exemplary rescue system. eCall will further improve the system with the help of sophisticated technology. If rescue services can reach the scene of an accident more quickly, this will save lives. I expect other member states to take a prompt decision to cooperate in eCall. If possible, by 2010, all passengers cars entering the market will be fitted with eCall as standard."
